How to Clean Your BioThane Leash, Long Line, or Collar
One of the best things about a BioThane dog leash is how low maintenance it is! The waterproof, stink-proof, and antimicrobial coating keeps it cleaner than almost any other leash material—no lingering odors, no crusty buildup, and no time consuming upkeep.
Most of the time, I don’t even need to clean my BioThane gear—I just hang it up after use, and it stays soft, vibrant, and odor-free. But if your long dog leash gets dragged through something sticky or starts looking dull after heavy use, here’s how to get it looking like new again!
Quick & Easy Cleaning Methods
For everyday dirt and dust, a simple wipe-down is all you need:
✔ Use a damp towel, baby wipe, or sanitizing wipe to clean the surface.
✔ No soaking or scrubbing required!
For a deeper clean:
✔Fill a bowl with mild soapy water (dish soap works great).
✔Soak your BioThane leash, long line, or waterproof dog collar for a few minutes.
✔Wipe down with a sponge or soft towel to remove dirt
✔Rinse and towel dry
Removing Stubborn Stains & Sticky Residue
If your custom dog leash picks up tar, sap, or another stubborn mess:
✔ Spray the spot with mild cleaner or rubbing alcohol.
✔ Let it sit for a few minutes.
✔ Wipe with a cloth, sponge, or an old toothbrush.
✔ Avoid heavy abrasives like steel wool, which can damage the coating.
After Beach Trips: Rinse your waterproof dog leash thoroughly—especially the hardware—with fresh water to prevent corrosion from salt exposure.
Sanitizing BioThane: For a deeper disinfecting clean, use a germicidal solution like Kennel Sol. Follow the dilution instructions, then spray or wipe down your gear.
💡 Light and bright colors may show dust more easily, so they might need more frequent cleaning to stay looking fresh.
Note: There are a few materials that may damage or penetrate BioThane, including skunk spray and DEET. If your leash comes into contact with either of these materials, cleaning may not be enough to remove the scent.
Caring for Brass Hardware
✔ Sticky clasps? Wash with mild soap and water, rinse, then add a few drops of WD-40 inside the clasp. Open and close it several times to work the oil through.
✔ Brass looking dull? It’s normal! Solid brass won’t rust, but it can develop a natural patina (a greenish or dull cast) over time.
To restore brass hardware:
1️⃣ Mix the juice of half a lemon with 1 teaspoon of baking soda to form a paste.
2️⃣ Coat the clasp, let it sit for up to 30 minutes.
3️⃣ Buff with a soft cloth, then rinse with water.
There are plenty of DIY brass cleaners online, but this quick, natural method works like a charm!
Other Maintenance Tips for Your BioThane Gear
✔After a beach trip, make sure to rinse with fresh water and thoroughly dry your gear - salt water is hard on leashes!
any outing where dirt and grime may have gotten inside your leash clip mechanism, before the grit dries and gets embedded inside. Follow the "sticky clasp" instructions above.
✔ Always dry your gear after use and store it in an open, well ventilated location, ideally indoors. Hanging your gear is a great way to make sure it stays dry between uses.
✔ Regularly inspect and test your leash, collar, and hardware to ensure they are intact and working properly. All materials will break down over time and with extended use.
