How to Build Your Custom BioThane Leash

BioThane Leash Customization Options

One of the things that sets us apart from most dog gear companies is that we offer full customization! When designing your Custom Leash, you can choose from a variety of sizes, colors, lengths, hardware options, and custom add ons for your leash. Whether you're looking for a custom dog leash tailored to your pup’s needs or a matching dog collar and leash set, we make it easy to create the perfect one of a kind walking set for you and your pup!

In this guide, we’ll walk you through our custom options to help you design a durable dog leash that suits your style and needs. If you have any questions or have a custom request beyond what’s available on our site, feel free to reach out—we may be able to make it happen!

How the Process Works

Our Leash and Long Line Collection is organized by hardware type (Sport or Brass) and width (Small 3/8", Medium 1/2", Large 3/4").

For example, if you have a 15-pound dog and need a long dog leash with brass hardware, you’ll choose Brass Leashes + Long Lines: Small Dogs (3/8" width).

Choose Your Leash Width

To get started, decide on the leash width width that best suits your dog. We offer three leash widths - Small (3/8"), Medium (1/2"), and Large (3/4"). This sizing refers to the width of the BioThane material. Here are our general guidelines:

  • Small: 3/8" wide (recommended for dogs under 30 lbs)

  • Medium: 1/2" wide (recommended for dogs 30-60 lbs)

  • Large: 3/4" wide (recommended for dogs over 60 lbs)

These recommendations are based on what we believe will be most comfortable for both the dog and the handler. However, every dog and handler is unique, with different needs and sensitivities, so consider what works best for your specific situation. If you're unsure about the right width, check out our Leash + Long Line Sizing Guide.

Choose your Leash Hardware

We offer two high quality hardware options:

  • Sport Autolocking Carabiner with Black Hardware – a high quality, aviation-grade, autolocking aluminum carabiner, lightweight yet incredibly strong.

  • Brass Bolt Snaps or Scissor (Trigger) Snaps with solid brass hardware – known for durability, rust resistance, and a classic look.

    • Bolt Snap – The industry standard - easy to use, durable, and classic.

    • Scissor Snap – A great option for beach adventures, as it resists sand and salt buildup and has an easy open/close.

Choose Your Leash Length

While 6 feet is the standard, at High Tail Hikes, we love longer leashes for giving dogs a more natural walking experience—allowing them to sniff, explore, and move comfortably while staying secure. Choose the right length for your pup’s size, strength, and your intended uses, and enjoy every adventure! 🚀

We offer leashes from 4 to 50 feet—plus custom lengths by request—so you can find the perfect balance of freedom and control for your dog.

4-6 ft – Ideal for city walks, crowded areas, and close control.
8-12 ft – A great middle ground, offering more room to roam while staying manageable. This is my favorite length range for an everyday, all purpose leash!
15-20 ft – Perfect for hiking, training, beach trips, and outdoor adventures, giving your pup space to explore while staying safe.
✔ 30-50 ft – Best for recall training, open spaces, and off-leash-style freedom in safe environments like SniffSpots, open fields, or big backyards. These lengths can pose safety risks if you are not experience managing a long line - ensure your dog has a solid recall, the area is uncrowded, and you’re comfortable managing the leash.

Choose Your Leash Color – Make It Uniquely Yours!

Your dog's gear should match their personality and your style - so why settle for just one color? Choose a bold, vibrant shade or mix and match with our Two Tone Leash option, where the handle and clasp ends feature an accent color of your choice. Prefer a sleek, single-color look? Stick with the classic solid color option, and consider a matching or coordinating collar. Learn more about how our leash color selections work here. Custom Handle Options – Designed for Your Lifestyle

Your leash should work for you, so choose a handle option that fits your adventures!

No Handle / Drag Line – Perfect for off-trail exploration, reducing snags on rocks and roots.

No Handle + D Ring – Attach a stand alone Traffic Handle whenever you need extra control. A good compromise between a drag line and a leash with a standard loop handle.

Fixed D Ring or Floating O Ring – Clip on accessories, carry your leash hands-free, or connect two leashes. A D Ring is "fixed," or riveted in place at the base of the handle, while the O Ring is "floating," or loose on the handle. A fixed D Ring is the most popular selection here, though some prefer a floating O Ring if they are planning to connect two leashes together.

Convertible Handle With Sliding O Ring – Our most popular upgrade, this versatile option lets you wear your hands-free dog leash around your waist or over your shoulder for total freedom.

Find the perfect setup for you and your pup! 🚀

Built-in Traffic Handle – Extra Control When You Need It

A built-in traffic handle (approx. 9" long) gives you quick control in busy areas, emergencies, or when managing a reactive dog. Choose your preferred placement—at the base, 12", 18", 24", or a custom height—to match your handling style.

For small dogs, short dogs, front-clip harnesses, or drag lines, we recommend skipping the traffic handle to avoid snags. Need flexibility? Check out our stand alone Traffic Handle in our Accessories Collection for an option you can attach and remove as needed.

Add a Quick Release Long Line Keeper

For easy storage and transport of your long line, you can add a Quick Release Long Line Keeper to your order. You can also find it in our Accessories Collection.
