FAQs

What are your leashes made from?

Biothane is a woven polyester webbing with a soft PVC coating. It’s durable, lightweight, waterproof, odor proof, antimicrobial, and easy to clean. It is an ideal material for working with dogs as it does not absorb water, dirt, mud, or odor - no more dirty, stinky rope, webbing, or leather leashes! Biothane is softer, more supple, and easier to grip than nylon, making leash burn less likely. It’s easier to maintain and more affordable than leather. Biothane comes in a variety of vibrant colors and different widths so the options for customization are endless!

How do I use a long line?

You can use a long line in lots of ways. Typically, you attach the line to your dog’s harness and simply leave it on your dog during a hike, outing, or training/play session. You can hold the line with slack or simply drop it and let it drag. Most dogs quickly get used to these lightweight lines and forget that they’re even on! You can pick up the line as needed for passing others, pulling over to the side of the trail, or taking a play break. You can also use the line as a tie out in your campsite, or anywhere you’re going to be hanging out for a while – just make sure your dog is supervised! You'll be amazed at how versatile the long line is for being out and about with your dog.

Is biothane chew proof?

No! Just like nylon, rope, webbing, or leather, biothane is NOT chew proof and a determined dog will be able to damage or even chew all the way through the line. For this and other safety reasons, you should never leave your dog unattended wearing any leash or long line. If you need to tie your dog out or leave them unattended for any period of time, please use a line expressly for that purpose, such as a cable.

How strong is biothane?

Biothane is incredibly strong. The 3/8” width has a tested break strength of 375 lbs, the 1/2” width has a break strength of 500 lbs, and the 3/4" width has a break strength of 750 lbs. Your leash’s hardware would be likely to fail before the biothane itself, however, our hardware is machine riveted and is of the highest possible quality, designed to last for years of heavy use.

How do I clean my leash?

Biothane is a cinch to clean – just wipe down with a damp towel or wet wipe. If needed, soak in soapy water and then rinse and wipe down. To sanitize your leash, wipe down with a sanitizing wipe or spray down and allow to air dry. You can even run your leash through the dishwasher – we’ve tried it! It will come out looking brand new (just make sure the clasp is secured and doesn't get caught in the dishwasher).

If you work at a daycare or training facility where the lines are being used by multiple dogs, it is best to clean them often with a germicidal solution such as Kennel Sol. Dilute according to instructions, then spray, wipe, or dunk leashes in the solution and allow to air dry.

How do I clean and care for my leash hardware?

We use only solid brass, steel, or anodized aluminium hardware on our gear, all of which resist rust. Over time, however, dirt, oil, and salt will collect in the spring mechanism of a standard bolt snap, resulting in a “sticky” clasp. To fix this, first dunk in soapy water and rinse the hardware to get any larger pieces of dirt/grime out. Then drop a few drops of WD-40 or another penetrating oil inside the clasp where the spring is, and open and close the clasp a few times until it is moving more smoothly. If you spend a lot of time at the beach, salt water will weather your hardware over time. Rinse your leashes well and air dry after a trip to the beach to help slow this process down.

How long will my order take to ship?

Each leash is custom-made by hand to order. Our current production lead time is 7-10 days, although we make every effort to ship your orders as quickly as possible (and often in less time). You will get an email confirmation and tracking number when your order has shipped. Because we carry so many colors and hardware options, occasionally we will need to email you to let you know that we are back-ordered on a particular item.

Please view the rest of our shipping policies here.

What’s your return/exchange policy?

Please view our return + exchange policies here. Each of our products is hand made to order, and we do not carry inventory. Please take note of our 25% restocking fee on elective returns and exchanges (this does not apply if a mistake was made on your order).
