FAQs

What is biothane?

Biothane is a woven polyester webbing with a soft PVC coating. It’s durable, lightweight, waterproof, odor proof, antimicrobial, and easy to clean. Biothane is an ideal material for working with dogs as it does not absorb water, dirt, mud, or odor - no more dirty, stinky rope, webbing, or leather leashes! Biothane is softer, more supple, and easier to grip than nylon, making leash burn less likely. It’s easier to maintain and more affordable than leather. Biothane comes in a variety of vibrant colors and different widths so the options for customization are endless!

What size + length should I order?

Our leashes come in three widths - 3/8” (Small), 1/2” (Medium), and 3/4" (Large). All biothane products are extremely strong with a break strength of many hundreds of pounds, so the width you choose is largely personal preference. When in doubt, we recommend choosing the thinnest, lightest line possible for your dog's comfort.

Our Standard Leashes come in 4, 5, and 6 foot lengths, while our long lines are available in 10, 15, 20, and 30 foot lengths (or email us for a custom length). The length you choose depends on your intended use. For neighborhood walks, we recommend a 6 foot leash. The 10 and 15 foot lengths are very versatile - great for hiking, beach visits, camping, picnicking, play dates - anywhere you’d like to give your dog more freedom than a standard leash. If you have a puppy, are working on recall, or working with a fearful or nervous dog, we recommend a 20 or 30 foot line. This will allow your dog lots of freedom but will allow you to easily pick up the line if needed.

We offer the option of a handle or no handle on our long lines. Some people prefer long lines without handles so that they don’t snag as easily on roots, rocks, or branches. If in doubt, we recommend adding a handle to your line.

How do I use a long line?

You can use a long line in lots of ways. Typically, you attach the line to your dog’s harness and simply leave it on your dog during a hike, outing, or training/play session. You can hold the line with slack or simply drop it and let it drag. Most dogs quickly get used to these lightweight lines and forget that they’re even on! You can pick up the line as needed for passing others, pulling over to the side of the trail, or taking a play break. You can also use the line as a tie out in your campsite or anywhere you’re going to be hanging out for a while - just make sure your dog is supervised! You'll be amazed at how versatile the long line is for being out and about with your dog.

Is biothane chew proof?

No! Just like nylon, rope, webbing, or leather, biothane is NOT chew proof and a determined dog will be able to damage or even chew all the way through the line. For this and other safety reasons, you should never leave your dog unattended wearing any leash or long line. If you need to tie your dog out or leave them unattended for any period of time, please use a line expressly for that purpose, such as a cable.

How strong is biothane?

Biothane is incredibly strong. The 3/8” width has a tested break strength of 375 lbs, the 1/2” width has a break strength of 500 lbs, and the 3/4" width has a break strength of 750 lbs. Your leash’s hardware would be likely to fail before the biothane itself, however, our hardware is machine riveted and is of the highest possible quality, designed to last for years of heavy use.

How do I clean my leash?

Biothane is a cinch to clean - just wipe down with a damp towel or wet wipe. If needed, soak in soapy water and then rinse and wipe down. To sanitize your leash, wipe down with a sanitizing wipe or spray down and allow to air dry. You can even run your leash through the dishwasher - we’ve tried it! It will come out looking brand new.

If you work at a daycare or training facility where the lines are being used by multiple dogs, it is best to clean them often with a germicidal solution such as Kennel Sol. Dilute according to instructions, then spray, wipe, or dunk leashes in the solution and allow to air dry.

How do I care for my biothane leash? My clasp is sticky. What should I do?

Biothane itself requires very little maintenance besides cleaning (described above). We use only solid brass or stainless steel hardware on our gear, which both resist rust. Over time, however, dirt, oil and salt will collect in the spring mechanism of the clasp, resulting in a “sticky” clasp. To fix this, drop a few drops of WD-40 or another penetrating oil inside the clasp where the spring moves and open and close the clasp a few times until it is moving more smoothly. If you spend a lot of time at the beach, salt water will weather your hardware over time. Rinse your leashes well and air dry after a trip to the beach to help slow this process down.
