Biothane FAQs

What is biothane?

Biothane is woven polyester webbing with a soft PVC coating. It’s durable, lightweight, waterproof, odor proof, antimicrobial, and easy to clean. Biothane is an ideal material for working with dogs as it does not absorb water, dirt, mud, or odor - no more dirty, stinky rope, webbing, or leather leashes! Biothane is softer and more supple than nylon, making leash burn less likely. It’s easier to maintain and more affordable than leather. Plus Biothane comes in a variety of great colors and different widths so the options for customization are endless!

What size + length should I order?

Our leashes come in two widths - 3/8” and 1/2”. The 3/8” width is perfect for small dogs, while the 1/2” is great for medium to large dogs. Both are incredibly strong, so the width you choose is ultimately personal preference.

For everyday dog walking, most people prefer the 5 or 6 foot length. Some parks require dog owners to have their dog on a 6 foot leash, so that’s something to keep in mind. For dog owners who do a lot of city walking or who prefer to keep their dogs in a close heel, the 4 foot length can be a good option.

For the longer lines, if you have a puppy or are working on recall, we recommend a 20 or 30 foot line. This will allow your dog lots of freedom but will allow you to easily pick up the line to “save” a recall or to collect your dog if needed. The 10 and 15 foot lengths are very versatile - great for hiking, camping, picnicking, doggy play dates - anywhere you’d like to give your dog a bit more freedom than a standard leash.

We offer the option of a handle or no handle. Some people prefer no handles on the longer lines so that they don’t snag as easily on roots, rocks, or branches. If you’re working in an open field, backyard, or at a day care center or training facility, you may prefer the security and convenience of a handle.

How do I use a long line?

You can use a long line in lots of ways. Typically, you attach the line to your dog’s harness and simply leave it on your dog during a hike, outing, or training/play session. You can hold the line with slack or simply drop it and let it drag. Most dogs quickly get used to these lightweight lines and forget that they’re even on! You can pick up the line as needed for passing others, pulling over to the side of the trail, or taking a play break. You can also use the line as a tie out in your campsite or anywhere you’re going to be hanging out for a while - just make sure your dog is supervised!

Is biothane chew proof?

No! Just like nylon, rope, webbing, or even leather, biothane is NOT chew proof and a determined dog will be able to damage or chew all the way through the line. For this and other safety reasons, you should never leave your dog unattended wearing any leash or long line.

How strong is biothane?

Biothane is incredibly lightweight but also strong. The 3/8” width has a tested break strength of 375 lbs and and the 1/2” width has a break strength of 500 lbs. Your leash’s hardware would be likely to fail before the biothane itself. Luckily our hardware is machine riveted and is of the highest quality, designed to last for years of heavy use

How do I clean my leash?

Biothane is a cinch to clean - just wipe down with a damp towel or wet wipe. If needed, soak in soapy water and then rinse and wipe down. To sanitize your leash, wipe down with a sanitizing wipe or spray down and allow to air dry. You can even run your leash through the dishwasher - we’ve tried it! It will come out looking brand spankin’ new.

If you work at a daycare or training facility where the lines are being used by multiple dogs, it is best to clean them often with a germicidal solution such as Kennel Sol. Dilute according to instructions, then spray, wipe, or dunk leashes in the solution and allow to air dry.

How do I care for my biothane leash? My clasp is sticky. What should I do?

Biothane itself requires very little maintenance. Unlike many purveyors of biothane products, who use plated hardware to save on cost, we use only solid brass or stainless steel hardware, which both resist rust. Over time, however, dirt, oil and salt will collect in the spring mechanism of the clasp, resulting in a “sticky” clasp. To fix this, drop a few drops of WD-40 or another penetrating oil inside the clasp where the spring moves and open and close the clasp a few times until it is moving more smoothly. If you spend a lot of time at the beach, salt water will weather your hardware over time. Rinse your leashes well and air dry after a trip to the beach to help slow this process down.

Can I cut down my line?

Yes, you can cut your line down and it will not fray! Another wonder of biothane. You can burn the cut end to seal it, but it’s not necessary.
